Original Garden Railroad Layout Construction Photos

After the walls were in place 50 yards of soil was brought in and compacted to develop the subgrade. 40 yards of sifted top soil was added on top of the subgrade for the landscaping.
Lookout Lake has been installed. Lake went from start to finish in one day with the experienced crew from Landscapes to Behold.

Tom Rey, Al Estabrook, Donna Hanson and another volunteer from the San Diego Garden Railway Society work on the Gold Mountain area of the layout. The cut to Desert Portal Tunnel is in place.
Tom Rey, Robert Westover and Rene Gallet work on staking forms for the concrete roadbed. The forms were made of strips of masonite. For the curves a jig was made that created forms that were the same radius of the track that was to be laid on top of it. This greatly increased the speed at which the forming work was done as the turns did not have to be measured out and laid up on site.

Tom Rey begins the process of laying track. The LGB rails were held in place on the roadbed with clear Lexol construction adhesive. Original LGB track connectors were used with LGB graphite grease in the joints. This later proved to be a problem for maintenance due to loss of electrical conductivity. Most of the original LGB connectors were replaced with screw on connectors by Russ Green, current Railway Engineer and maintenance of way supervisor on staff at the nursery.

Nursery Owner Ken Andersen (left) and Dave Crocker (right) look over a double track bridge that Dave and Bob Baxter (not in picture) scratch built to span Granite Gorge in the layout. Made of Redwood with brass fittings it truly a beautiful piece of engineering and work!
Robert Westover works setting the landing for one end of the Lookout Falls twin LGB Bridges. The LGB bridges are excellent pieces that are well engineered and look great in place. There are 3 in the layout.
